The word to know today Cardinal The four signs that begin the seasons: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. The name comes from the Latin for a hinge, the point on which the year turns.
Ptolemy of second century Alexandria set out the signs in classes by their relation to the Sun’s turning points, and the later tradition gathered the four that begin the seasons under one name. The Moon stands at twenty-six degrees of Pisces this morning, a waxing gibbous a little over nine tenths lit, and at 19:53 UTC today she crosses into Aries, the first of them.
The four are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn, the signs that begin at the equinoxes and the solstices, where the Sun’s course changes the season. The class is called cardinal, from the Latin for a hinge.
Until the crossing she is void of course, the stretch after a Moon makes her last aspect in a sign and before she enters the next. This one began at 03:31 UTC, when her trine to Mercury was exact, the two bodies 120 degrees apart. It ends at 19:53 UTC, sixteen hours and twenty-two minutes in all.
Aries is Mars’s sign, and the Moon holds no office there, so she enters peregrine, a traveler without a home in the sign. Saturn is waiting there, at nine degrees. Aries is the sign of his fall, where the tradition held him at his weakest, and on Saturday at 13:06 UTC she comes to a conjunction with him, the two bodies at the same degree.
The full Moon follows on Monday at 04:11 UTC, in Taurus, the sign of her exaltation, the place of her highest dignity.
From the shelf Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos Second century Alexandria, the work in which the tradition’s classes of signs are laid out.
