The word to know today Increasing in light The Moon between new and full, her lit portion growing each night. Ptolemy gave the two quarters of this half of her month moisture and then heat, and the waning half dryness and then cold.
Heat is what Ptolemy assigned to this part of the month. The Moon is in Aquarius, at five degrees this morning, a waxing gibbous a little over half lit, past her first quarter and building toward full.
In the Tetrabiblos, written in second century Alexandria, Ptolemy divided her month into four quarters and gave each a quality. From new Moon to first quarter she was more productive of moisture. From first quarter to full, of heat. From full to last quarter, of dryness, and from last quarter to the next new Moon, of cold. The scheme let an astrologer read the same sign differently depending on where in her month the Moon stood.
She entered Aquarius at 01:39 UTC, after a void of more than nine hours that opened at yesterday’s first quarter. Aquarius is Saturn’s second sign in the traditional scheme, so her host has not changed. She holds no dignity here; she is peregrine, a traveler without office.
Tonight, at about 21:51 UTC, she makes a sextile to Saturn, the sixty-degree aspect the tradition counted as mildly favorable. Tuesday brings harder contacts: an opposition to Mars in the early hours, and another to Jupiter late in the day, both of them in Leo.
By Ptolemy’s reckoning, the heat lasts until the full Moon on the 26th.
From the shelf Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos Second century Alexandria, where the Moon’s month was divided into four quarters, each with its own quality.
