The word to know today Applying An aspect still being formed, with the faster planet not yet at exactness. The Moon, moving about thirteen degrees a day, is nearly always the one applying.
Applying is the word for an aspect that is still being formed. At twelve degrees of Pisces, a waxing gibbous more than four fifths lit, the Moon is applying to a trine with Mercury.
An aspect applies while the faster body is still closing on exactness, and separates once it has passed. The Moon travels about thirteen degrees a day, so she is nearly always the one closing. The tradition treated the two directions as different conditions, a matter still to come against one already past. The horary writers, William Lilly of 1647 London among them, gave weight to which planet she applied to next and which she had just left.
She has only just left Venus. Their trine was exact at 16:52 UTC yesterday, and she now stands about eleven degrees past it. Mercury is next, at twenty degrees of Scorpio. That trine, the two bodies 120 degrees apart, is exact at 03:31 UTC on Friday.
It is also the last aspect she makes in Pisces. After it she is void of course, the stretch between a Moon’s final aspect in a sign and her entry into the next, and the void runs until she crosses into Aries at 19:53 UTC, sixteen hours and twenty-two minutes later. The old writers applied that condition chiefly to horary and electional work, questions asked and times chosen.
One aspect remains in Pisces, and Mercury holds it.
