The word to know today
Detriment
The sign opposite a planet’s own domicile, where it was held to work against its own nature. For the Moon, whose sign is Cancer, it is Capricorn, which she enters at 12:57 UTC today.
Detriment is the word for this afternoon. The Moon spends the morning at twenty-six degrees of Sagittarius, still void of course, and at 12:57 UTC she crosses into Capricorn, the sign the tradition held to be her detriment.
The term marks the sign opposite a planet’s own. The Moon’s own sign is Cancer, and Capricorn sits directly across the zodiac from it.
Ptolemy, in second century Alexandria, explained the arrangement in the Tetrabiblos. Cancer and Leo, the most northern signs and the ones that bring the heat, went to the two lights: Cancer to the Moon, Leo to the Sun. Saturn, cold by nature and moving in the orbit farthest from them, received the signs opposite, Capricorn and Aquarius. Ptolemy added that an opposition across those signs did not make for beneficence.
So the Moon in Capricorn is a guest in Saturn’s house, at the point of the zodiac farthest from her own. The older writers read her here as constrained, held to a colder discipline than suits her.
Her first contact in the new sign comes late tonight, a sextile to Venus at about 22:52 UTC. The phase is a waxing crescent, a little over a quarter lit, and the first quarter falls on Sunday.
When she leaves Capricorn, early Monday UTC, it is for Aquarius: Saturn’s other sign.
