The word to know today
Impediment
A condition that hinders a planet in its work. The medieval writers kept long lists of the Moon’s impediments, from her fall to a joining with Saturn or Mars.
Gemini appears nowhere in the Moon’s usual tables of dignity, but not every writer treated it as neutral ground. She entered the sign at 01:01 UTC and stands this morning at seven degrees, waning gibbous and ninety-two percent lit. In the standard scheme she is peregrine here, holding no dignity at all.
Guido Bonatti, in thirteenth century Italy, kept a list of the conditions in which the Moon is impeded, hindered in her work. Most of it is what the older material would lead one to expect: her fall, burning under the Sun, a joining with Saturn or Mars.
One item on the list is a sign. Bonatti counted the Moon in Gemini among her impediments because Gemini is the twelfth sign from Cancer, her own house, the sign just before it. The twelfth place from any point was the one the old writers tied to confinement and hidden trouble. Lilly’s table of essential dignities gives her nothing in Gemini either way; the impediment was a reading of place, not of rulership.
Her next contact is a sextile to Saturn at 16:32 UTC, the aspect of sixty degrees. Two more sextiles follow tomorrow, to Mars at seventeen degrees of Leo and to Jupiter at twenty-four, before her last aspect in the sign.
She leaves Gemini on Friday at 02:05 UTC, for Cancer, her own house.
