The word to know today
Void of course
The interval after the Moon completes her last major aspect in a sign and before she enters the next. Tonight it opens at 21:55 UTC and closes with her ingress into Capricorn at 12:57 UTC tomorrow.
Void of course begins tonight at 21:55 UTC. Until then the Moon travels through Sagittarius, at fourteen degrees this morning, a waxing crescent about a fifth lit.
The term names an interval: the stretch after the Moon completes her last major aspect in a sign and before she enters the next. Shortly before 21:00 UTC she trines Jupiter, ruler of the sign she is passing through. Her last contact follows within the hour: a sextile to the Sun, the sixty-degree aspect the tradition counted as mildly favorable. After it she makes no further aspect in Sagittarius, and she does not cross into Capricorn until 12:57 UTC tomorrow. The void runs about fifteen hours.
Guido Bonatti, in thirteenth century Italy, listed the void Moon among the conditions that weakened a chart’s judgment. William Lilly, writing in London in 1647, read it in a horary question as a sign that the matter would come to little. The tradition applied it chiefly to questions asked and times chosen, not to the day at large.
The older writers did not reckon the void quite as a modern calendar does. They worked with orbs, a zone of influence around each planet, so a Moon still within reach of a planet across the sign boundary might not count as void at all. One condition, two methods, and the hours do not always match.
Capricorn, her detriment, waits on the other side.
